Accessibility Statement

Elymica is committed to making education accessible to every learner — including those using assistive technologies, operating on low-bandwidth networks, or working with older devices. This statement covers our current conformance status, what we test against, and how to report issues.

Conformance Status

Elymica targets WCAG 2.1 Level AA conformance across all platform portals. Our primary portals — student, teacher, parent, and marketplace — are the focus of our current accessibility work. Publisher and admin portals follow the same design system and are subject to the same standards.

We consider accessibility an ongoing commitment, not a one-time audit. As new features are built, accessibility requirements are part of our definition of done — not a post-launch remediation step.

What We’ve Built

Six areas where we have invested in accessible design.

Keyboard Navigation

All interactive elements: menus, buttons, forms, course navigation, and quiz controls: are reachable and operable using a keyboard alone. Focus order follows a logical reading sequence throughout every portal.

Screen Reader Support

Pages use semantic HTML5 landmarks (main, nav, header, footer), ARIA labels on interactive components, and live regions for dynamic content updates (quiz feedback, loading states, error messages). We test against NVDA on Windows and VoiceOver on macOS and iOS.

Colour Contrast

Body text and interactive elements meet a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 against their backgrounds. Large text and UI components meet the 3:1 minimum. Colour is never the sole means of conveying information — icons, labels, and patterns supplement colour cues.

Resizable Text

The platform is fully functional at 200% browser zoom without loss of content or functionality. Text sizes are set in relative units (rem/em) so that users who override browser default font sizes will see their preferences respected throughout.

Mobile and TalkBack

Our mobile-first design ensures touch targets are at least 44×44 px and adequately spaced. We test with TalkBack on Android (the most widely used screen reader across Africa) and VoiceOver on iOS. Swipe navigation through lesson content works without visual interaction.

Low-Bandwidth and Offline

Elymica is designed for 2G and 3G network conditions common across Africa. Images are lazy-loaded and compressed. Course content is progressively rendered. Offline-capable features allow learners to continue progress without an active connection.

Known Limitations

We are transparent about the areas where we know the platform falls short of our target. These are active remediation items, not accepted gaps.

Video captions

Not all publisher-uploaded videos include captions. Publishers are required to provide caption files for new uploads. Retroactive captioning of existing content is ongoing. Target: all new content captioned from Q3 2026.

PDF course materials

Some publisher-provided PDF documents have not been tagged for screen reader accessibility. We are introducing a content quality check for PDF accessibility on upload. Target: PDF tagging requirement enforced from Q3 2026.

Rich text editor (publisher portal)

The drag-and-drop quiz builder and lesson editor in the publisher portal have limited keyboard accessibility for reordering operations. A keyboard-operable reorder mode is on the roadmap for Q2 2026.

Data visualisation in reports

Charts in the admin revenue dashboard rely on colour distinction without sufficient alternative text descriptions. Accessible chart alternatives with data tables are planned for Q2 2026.

Assistive Technology Testing

We test the platform against the following assistive technologies before major releases:

ToolVersionPlatformBrowser
NVDA2023.3+WindowsChrome, Firefox
VoiceOvermacOS SonomamacOSSafari
VoiceOveriOS 17iPhone / iPadSafari (mobile)
TalkBackAndroid 13+AndroidChrome (mobile)

Testing is conducted manually by our engineering team and supplemented with automated scans using axe-core. We prioritise TalkBack coverage given its prevalence among learners on Android devices across Africa.

Report an Accessibility Issue

If you encounter a barrier on the platform, we want to know. We aim to respond to accessibility reports within 5 business days and to resolve confirmed issues within 30 days, or provide a documented workaround.
